I think you guys read only one side of the reports on the FARMS/MI firings. Not only did Bro. Bradford handle it in a very sneaky and under-handed way, but it goes contrary to the role Pres. Hinkley envisioned FARMS playing as part of BYU. To agree with Bradford ignores all the people who've been helped and kept in the Church, because FARMS and other apologetics organizations do respond directly to the attacks on the Church. They've done great good. The demise of FARMS is a sad, sad thing.
I actually agree with you. I don't love the direction FARMS is taking. I guess Al got the last word in on that topic and I didn't bother to engage, mostly due to my own ignorance.
Regarding the discussion that was had about Heavenly Mother, I think we need to be careful about the non doctrinal theological excuses we make for not knowing much about Her. Just like the non doctrinal excuses that developed before 1978 about blacks not having the priesthood (like fence sitters in the preexistence, seed of Cain), non doctrinal explanations for Heavenly Mother like "she is too sacred to be talked about" or "Heavenly Father wants to protect Her" can be very problematic as well.
We spend so much effort in the Church promoting Motherhood, but when it comes to our own heavenly parents for some reason we are totally okay being in a motherless house. It's true that we don't know much about her, but lets stop assuming that it is because either she is too sensitive to deal with the reality of the fallen nature of Her spiritual children or that Heavenly Father is so paranoid about protecting Her that he doesn't want us to develop any relationship with our divine mother. What kind of earthly father would want to protect his wife from her own Children just because some of their Children will profane their mother? Mothers deal with crap, in the most literal sense of the word. They deal with heartache and sadness. I am guessing they are okay with that because the mother-child relationship is so important.
We Mormons have a theological gem in regards to Heavenly Mother. Lets not squander our birthright with these harmful non doctrinal excuses that paints a chauvinistic picture of our Heavenly Father. I would recommend this Times and Seasons post for more on this topic. http://timesandseasons.org/index.php/2010/10/in-p…
Also re Heavenly Mother, I think it is a big doctrinal error to say that she doesn't have the priesthood. The temple promises that men and women exalted together will be priests and priestesses, and the D&C promises that women will become gods (or goddesses). Exalted women absolutely hold the priesthood, including Heavenly Mother.
I also have never heard anyone suggest (other than the Godmakers movie) that there is more than one Heavenly Mother. Since the default position is that polygamy is an abomination (see Jacob) and only allowed under rare conditions, I believe there is only one Heavenly Mother for all mankind.
I also believe there would just be one heavenly mother, but how do we align that with the fact that we allow plural marriage sealings? Will one sealed wife be the "prominent" one when all is said and done? It's obviously all conjecture, but one has to wonder.
I wasn't saying she didn't have the priesthood, but my comments on to whom to pray basically streamed out as I thought of them. I think it makes sense to view Heavenly Father and Mother as a sort of united God, and the fact that women are able to officiate in ordinances of the temple speaks to the dual nature of godhood.
